Yeah you should be fine, there's no real tuning wizards in our series anyways (some guys do transmission ratios) so it's not like we're at a huge disadvantage, especially with the BoP adjustments. Just set a 1:51 and you'll be competitive in the race.

I have to pick up my girlfriend from the airport at some point on Saturday, I will be there depending on what time I get back.
I really hope I make it because I have a Pinto and a 914 all ready to go. The 914 has much less tendency to Orlove, so I will probably be using it. It also deals with my erratic braking to throttle transitions a lot better.

Either the Porsche 914 or the Datsun 510. I tested each car up to specifications and those two are my preferences. The Datsun might be the worst sounding car in the game. I'll probably go with the Porsche because it feels more stable.

I wanna work where you do if you can actually get someone to cover you lol. Are you guys on trimesters? Buddy of mine's school is and they just started too. We started January 12th and since most of my classes have three exams plus a final over a sixteen-week semester it works out to an exam a month per class. Problem is that I have all four exams in the same week all year so I basically have four finals weeks this semester. Yay engineering.

Working where I work is a royal pain in the ass for the most part, but because we're open on the weekends, people are used to having to work them and they don't make plans. We also don't get our schedule until 2 or 3 days before the start of that work week, so it makes planning things ahead of time difficult. My university has 2 semesters a year, they're both pretty long. Denver University does something similar to what you do. Sounds terrible.
SVTyler

02/07/2015 at 11:12 | 0 |
I delivered pizzas through high school til now and that sounds like what we did too: found out our schedule on a Friday, work week started Sunday, long nights, no weekends off. Only thing was people never took other people's shifts if they were scheduled off. Not that they had plans, they just liked sitting on their asses apparently.
And school isn't that bad, this semester just sucks hardcore because of exam scheduling, normally it's only like an exam a week instead of three which is totally manageable. Plus I procrastinate like a motherfucker so I make it harder on myself than it should be...

That's a lot of exams.. We have midterms and finals. I can't imagine that many. Yeah.. I've procrastinated and dragged my feet for far too long. I had some kind of epiphany a few weeks ago and just decided to stop messing around and get it done so I piled on the credits. It's going to be long long year, but there's no motivation like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I really need to hit that point myself. I'm a junior but I've got another three years left because I was undecided for the first couple semesters; I keep telling myself it doesn't really matter how fast I finish school since I'll be here forever anyways and I might as well take my time and do really well. Figured I'd graduate with a 3.5 in six years instead of a 2.5 in four, plus I have an internship at Chrysler this summer anyways. I'm paying for school myself so either way I'm going to be saddled with a ton of debt so I figure I might as well make it a bit easier work-wise.

Actually yeah, for being as miserable as they are (we rented one in California, big mistake) I've seen an ungodly amount of non-rental 200's/Sebrings all being driven by old people who probably bought them because of brand allegiance, i can't think of why they'd buy them otherwise. Newest generation has been reviewed much better as far as interior and build quality goes, it just remains to be seen how long-term reliability is.

I have some Datsun 510 tunes already that are decently stable, but the short wheelbase limits just how stable it can be. The 914 I've never tinkered with, but I'll see if I can whip one up. A few questions:
Driving style? What settings do you use for steering, braking, traction control, and stability control? Do you have a preference for oversteer or understeer if you break the tires loose?
TopSirloin
> Desu-San-Desu
02/08/2015 at 10:34 | 0 |
The Datsun is a wildcard. I would have preferred it if the competition were hot laps or something purely time based, but with the minor pushing and bumping that I knew would happen, the 914 is much much more composed. I'd have been sliding all over the place and breaking the tires loose at every corner in the 510. Plus, it sounds like a blender crushing ice.
I have steering assist off, ABS off, suggested line off and just use suggested braking liine. I try to keep my lines as clean as possible, I don't break the tires loose at all usually. I liked the 914 because it could really dive in to a turn and change directions quickly while maintaining grip regardless of some bumping in the race. The one drawback of the 914 was that with the sport gearbox, gear changes were kind of sluggish and it didn't want to hold higher RPM's and would upshift at bad times. The race gear box hurt launch badly, but quicker shifts and holding gears longer more than made up for it. I raised final drive ration for 4.41:1 to 4.75:1 and it felt pretty good. That's the only thing I changed really.

I couldn't hear anyone so hopefully there weren't any complaints about my driving. I got too close to Kampfesser (sp?) in the 2002 once or twice, but tried to pull off until he got back in front of me, otherwise I thought my passes were clean. That one guy was clearly just NFG messing around. I didn't expect to come back after he landed me in last place with his hit.
SVTyler
> TopSirloin
02/08/2015 at 10:46 | 0 |
No you were totally fine, a bit too quick laptime-wise (maybe dial it back a bit next race?) but you drove clean. And was it a 914 giving you problems? I got hit and spun twice and another guy got punted off-track by the same dude when he passed in a corner he definitely shouldn't have. It's one thing to make accidental contact but that kind of aggressive driving combined with the high PI handicap isn't something we're going to tolerate in this series.
SVTyler
> TopSirloin
02/08/2015 at 11:02 | 0 |
Actually wait, that was you in the Martini 914 that got fucked in turn 1? Not trying to crucify the dude that hit you but that was one of the dumbest moves I've seen in any of our racing series. I know he didn't do it on purpose but yeah, it's that kind of shit that shouldn't be happening and I've dedicated a large amount of the post-race to warn everyone about it.
Might even PM that guy, I'm really not happy about how this race went.

TopSirloin

02/08/2015 at 11:12 | 0 |
The green 914 was really aggressive but it wasn't the one that put me in to the wall.. That one hit me in the last turn before the start line, and hadn't slowed down at all from the straight-away.. it was a straight up deliberate spearing.. it was the InfernoVivo guy.
Yeah my times were a bit too fast. It's really hard to knowingly diminish your performance and trust that everyone else will do so as well. I guess you build trust after a while and feel confident doing so. I hadn't cracked a 1:50 lap time in my practicing, but somehow posted just under 1:49.8 in race.. I honestly felt pretty good about being within the limits defined, being close to the 1:51 time and right at B450. Looked like most people were closer to 1:50 as it is. There was definitely more variation in PI than I thought. I don't think I could have gained any ground if I hadn't been able to gain a few hundreths of a second here or there. have you considered using the exact same car with the exact same modifcations across the board?

Yeah that was me in the unfinished Martini livery Porsche that got plowed in turn 1. I didn't get upset about it but I don't think that was an accident. Was there a way to watch the replay? I don't think he braked at all.. I got flung into the fence above the wall.

I'm using auto gearbox.. I don't have a wheel or any kind of set up, just the controller. This is race yesterday was actually my first race in the series, so I don't have a time set at Road Atlanta yet, but I can do some testing and let you know. My Fourza disk cracked and I hadn't replaced it until a few weeks ago.

I just use the controller myself. It took me about an hour to get used to gearshifting with the controller (I recommend not bothering with enabling the clutch). I would really recommended trying to learn how to use manual with the controller, as it will REALLY help your braking, as you can engine brake into turns and get down into the proper gear sooner.

I'll talk with him about it. I don't want any bad blood between anyone and keep in mind it wasn't intentional, sometimes people are looking at their rev count or another car and don't notice what's happening in front of them. Shit happens, basically, we just do our best to minimize it.
As far as lap times go yeah, it's kind of a flawed system but it's the best one we've got. Most people run fast in the race anyways thanks to drafting or whatever but sometimes the times get a bit out of hand like they did this week. It's not intentional, I think people set their times based off a five-lap session and just find faster lines during the race. What I'll propose we do next race is turn rewind on during our practice sessions and base our max time off a 'perfect lap' that we physically can't go faster than so we don't get people getting used to the track during the race and running way over.
We considered a lot of things in this series and having a one-make, one-tune series was one of them. Only problem is that it puts the less-skilled people at a serious disadvantage; you weren't here for it but we ran an R3-class GT series in which the cars were basically identical (no BoP adjustments) and it extremely uncompetitive since the top guys would just destroy everyone and basically hot-lap while the slow dudes would finish 3 minutes behind in a 45 minute race and get lapped twice.
And I would very much like to see that replay too just to see how he drove the whole race: I was right behind you and he didn't brake at all, he even cut me off to sideswipe you. I'd bet 100% he was just trying to pass and didn't wreck you on purpose, but in this series we really need to be aware and not push the envelope and that's a prime example of how not to do it. Problem is that the more BoP you add the faster the cars get in a straight line so you could be hauling ass towards a corner and think you can pass the guy when you really need to brake earlier since you're going so fast.
There's a fine line between just not being a very good driver and being a menace and it's getting a bit fuzzy. I'm hoping this is just a bad race...

Oh there's no bad blood, don't worry.. like I said I wasn't mad about it.. that's the nice thing about a longer race. I knew I had time left to put some passes together.
I hadn't considered drafting as a reason lap times were inflated, good point. I think your system is about as good as it gets at creating an environment that's competitive and fair, it's just a question of how closely people are following the guidlines. I built the car to the exact specifications and PI limit, and made a few minor adjustments in tuning, and ended up posting lap times faster than the standard that was set... Just a question, in the screencap of you setting the 1:51 lap time in the GTA, it looks like your PI was 393 or something C-class rated. Shouldn't the lap standard be set in a car that's the exact speciifications defined?
I may have gone overboard, and I'm not crazy, but I actually bought every car in the list, upgraded them to the specifications you listed, and lapped each one 10-15 times at Infineon and recorded times in a spreadsheet. along with benchmark stats and PI characteristic stats.. With the cap at B450, I was able to get every car right around 1:50.. The Datsun was actually cracking in to the 1:48's, it's just too much to handle well.. It was a strong candidate in B450.

I mean this is video game racing, I don't think people care enough to fudge the numbers, they just don't care enough to be as thorough as you are. It's not malicious, people have other shit to do than spend an hour testing their car out, which is understandable.
Honestly, if I set our lap times based on B450 you guys would have to add so much power to keep up the racing would be terrible: anything vaguely resembling a straight and the high-PI guys would just be gone and it'd be impossible to pass them in the corners. What we do now is set a lap time based what I imagine the middle of the pack would run if we all were at B450: I first race at B450, then subtract 2 seconds from the time and build a car that meets that and that time becomes our weekly max. It works really well because it forces both outliers (fast and slow) to adjust so that one group alone isn't disadvantaged (see the below pic from our race at Le Mans, those finishing times are perfect).
It also nerfs the faster people by forcing them to take away tire width and compound and thus grip. Somewhat obviously, the fastest people in the series are the fastest in the corners, so taking away that advantage evens out the playing field without having to give the slow people an overpowered car like they would need if we set the time based on a PI of 450. It just makes the racing more fair for everyone.

02/08/2015 at 12:22 | 0 |
Okay, that makes sense.. So you were hitting around 1:49 in the B450 car then. In no way am I saying your system has something wrong with it.. I think it's great and takes the big picture skill level into consideration, and I hopefully I'm off on Saturday so I can get my feet wet in the Trans-Am A550 series.
SVTyler
> TopSirloin
02/08/2015 at 12:28 | 0 |
Yeah, about 1:48.8 or something, took off some tired width and rounded down. The system in theory works really well, this race was just a clusterfuck with all the crashes and stuff that a lot of people got screwed early and couldn't really catch up.
We'll see you for the next race if you can make it. This race wasn't really an accurate representation of the A550 series so it shouldn't be as chaotic.

Yeah I get what you're saying.. regardless, it was fun and I think everyone is appreciative of the time you put in to this. It's going to be harder to find a car to get dialed in to the A550 series.. Those are some really close competitive times for that group at LeMans.

My suggestion for Infineon would be either the XB Falcon or Javelin, both those cars are on rails. I'll post the final lap time on Thursday (3 exams in 3 days starting Monday) but I imagine it'll be around 1:45 or 1:46 so set your car up for that and you should be fine. Most races have been like Le Mans where there's pockets of 3-4 people finishing within a few seconds of each other so you can expect the same this weekend. Last race was just weird.
And y'all damn well better be appreciative, this is a pain in the ass to run lol. It's worth it just to be racing with actual people; I used to race online all the time and the idiots you meet made me quit Forza altogether several times.

So the A550 next week is Infineon as well? The Javelin is ugly AF. I have a few of the approved cars already so I'll be sure to tinker around and find something.. handling is what I'll be looking for. Yeah you do a great job hosting this. I messed around online a few times and had a similar experience of never wanting to try again.. Well good luck on those exams!

We race at all the tracks B450 first so people can get used to racing there before we move up to the big cars. And thanks man, I'll need it.

Yeah, for all upcoming races we'll start no later than 4:30. Last few races were getting a bit ridiculous...

For the record InfernoVivo said he was lagging hard so he didn't run into you on purpose, he just got lag-warped into you. Figured I should mention that.

That makes perfect sense.. it would have been tough to pull off what he did without some crazy lag anyway. I see he's been around a while in your series and figured he wasn't someone looking to stir shit up. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah no problem, normally we don't have any lag at all so this is just another isolated incident.
